Unknown tips for PC

Hi,

This blog is to educate people on speeding up their PCs running Windows (xp and later).
Before going any further, just answer these questions and see if this blog is meant for you.

Is your PC

  • Running slow?
  • Taking a long time to boot up and shut down?
  • Applications are loading very slowly?
  • Takes a lot of time to open and close any window?
  • Hangs up every now and then?
  • Takes hours to download/copy files?
  • Shows frequent error messages?

If your answer is yes to one of them, you may read on..

First of all, make sure that you have all the necessary hardwares fo the PC. Like enough RAM. Less RAM leads to slow PC and poor performance. 1GB of RAM is what I prefer, however 512MB is also not bad.

After this, first, let me tell you the most common reasons for a slow PC and explain them in detail.

  1. Undeleted temporary files
  2. Lot of unwanted softwares and toolbars installed.
  3. Conflicting softwares
  4. Improper drivers
  5. Affected by Virus,Trojan and worms.
  6. Lot of Background applications.
  7. Resource-hog applictions.
  8. Registry Errors.
  9. Un-Compitable application/Soft ware.
  10. Lot of Fragmentation in Hard drive.

  • Well, these are the most common resons.

1.Temporary Files: Most of the people don't know that Windows makes a backup of files and apps while installing an un-installing a software or application.A major part of these files remain in the temporary files section and temp files are also created while downloading data from internet. There are 2 folders containing this. These data are to be deleted. These are of no use to the system.

To delete them, goto Start -> Run , type in "temp" (without quotes) and a folder will appear with lot of contents. These are junk data. Select all and Shift+Del them.

Again, Start -> Run ->type in " %temp% " (no quotes). Do the same, Shift+Del all the data.

Sometimes it saves GBs of memory in your system..

2) Unwanted Soft wares and Toolbars installed: Make sure that your PC has only those soft wares that you need and use.Sometimes it so happens that we install many soft wares so that we can use them, but we never use all of them. Best example is Media Players. I used to have VLC, Real player, Gom, Winamp,Zoom player, KM-Player... and more. But its just waste of space and resource as we use only 1 or 2 players. This applies to other matters as well..

A lot of application while installing will ask you to install their free, customised toolbars.... like yahoo toolbar.. etc.. I prefer not to install all of them because it takes a hell lot of time for Internet browsers to load them first, then open up. It also leads to frequent hanging-up of the browsers. However, Plug-ins wont affect the browsers.

3) Software Conflicts: This happens when we install 2 or more soft wares which are not compatable with each other. Like installing 2 Antivirus, Some script generating soft wares..etc..

I have also heard many reporting problems when they install an extra firewall which conflicts with windows Firewall. Be sure, survey on net before installing anything to your system. Its your right and makes sense to know what you are installing in your computer.

4) Improper Drivers: You might have installed a wrong driver or an incompatible driver to your PC. For example a XP driver on a Vista system.. so on.. Or you might not installed the driver to a particular hardware at all!! Open up the "Device Manager" by right clicking on "My Computer" and selecting "Properties" . Here you can find which hard wares have problems.

5) Affected by Virus, Trojans or Worms: The main intention of a Virus or a Malware is to harm your computer or steal data from your computer. Some virus replicate themselves like about a million times per second. This will obviously drive the system resource and CPU to its replication. So, be sure to keep your Antivirus, Antispywares updated and Scan your PC regularly. Also make sure that you don't visit untrusted websites.

6) Background Applications: Here, let me tell you that most of the people don't know that there are many unwanted process and applications running in the background and at the time of windows boot. This is most common yet unknown topic for most of the guys out there.

To check which applications run at the boot-time of your PC,

  1. Press "Windows+R " (run) and type in "msconfig " a window, showing a list of options will appear.
  2. Select 'start up' option.
  3. msconfig window
  4. Now, carefully select only those process which you feel is essential to your PC. Most essential are Antivirus related ( 2 or 3 processes) , Graphics related etc..

Process like Some Update, or some IM client.... Disable them. However, if you feel you want them back, you can always change them back.

#TIP: You can press Ctrl+Alt+Del keys (most used keys for windows!! hhehe) and see the processes running and CPU and RAM amount there.. If you find anything suspicious, Kill them. But don't kill a system process like svchost.exe etc... Be careful here.

7) Resource Hogs: Few applications like some old antivirus or Graphic application or a sidebar, theme, animations, Screen savers etc... utilise most of CPU and memory for their effective execution. You have to be aware of those apps and try avoiding Multiple clicks, and Hovering up of mouse when your system is slow as this records multiple commands.

8) Registry Errors: Registry errors are caused due to errors in UN-installing or installing and also due to sudden shutdown of PC and so on. Its always better to have a Registry-Fixer to fix those errors and optimise the PC.

#Note: Some Registry fixers will harm your PC!!(IT has happened to me) Always use a trusted software.

9) Compatibility issues: Some applications require certain specifications to be met. Like OS, RAM,Disk Space and so on.. If you don't read the 'system specification' and install it, you may end up with a crawling PC!!

10) Fragmented Files: Now, lets not go deep into this topic as its very vast one to cover now.Fragmentation is caused in your hard-drive (memory of OS) because we use randomly many applications, stored in different clusters of different locations of the drive. This jumbling makes it hard to find the specific file for specific purpose at a specific time.

Windows comes with an inbuilt Defragmenter which works pretty well.. But still, if you want, you can use some other tool. There are many out there..
